PhD Candidate Student Won the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Data Driven Computing and Machine Learning in Engineering (DACOMA-19)

September 9-11, 2019, hosted by Tongji University, China、Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany、Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany, and organized by Tongji University, the International Conference on Data Driven Computing and Machine Learning in Engineering (DACOMA-19) was held at Sino-French Center, Tongji University, Shanghai, China. Professor Wengang ZHANG guided the postdoctoral Lin WANG, PhD candidates Runhong ZHANG and Zhenyu WANG attended the conference and gave oral reports. The opening ceremony of the conference was chaired by Professor Zhu Hehua of Tongji University. Professor Gu Xianglin, Vice President of Tongji University, and Timon Rabczuk, Professor of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany, delivered welcome speeches.

Postdoctoral Lin WANG was invited to chair the conference venue and made a report entitled “Probabilistic stability analysis of earth dam slope using extreme gradient boosting method”. The application of machine learning based on geotechnical reliability is analyzed and discussed the influence of soil spatial variability on dam stability.PhD candidate Zhenyu WANG gave a report entitled “DEM study of modeling method and thermal cracking of sandstone”, studied the modeling method of granular materials and the application of discrete element numerical simulation. PhD candidate Runhong ZHANG gave a presentation entitled "Prediction of diaphragm wall deformation for braced excavation in anisotropic clays using ensemble learning". The main content of research is based on the ensemble learning algorithm to predict the diaphragm wall deformation of an anisotropic clay excavation at a certain area in Singapore.

At the end of the report, the researchers had a thorough discussion and exchange on the content of novel presentations. Assessment by expert group, PhD candidate Runhong ZHANG’s participating papers stood out from more than 200 papers and won the best student paper award of this conference. The quota of this award is totally 5 places, and the rest were won by students from Tsinghua University, Tongji University and Shanghai Jiaotong University.

The conference effectively promoted data-driven computing, big data analysis and artificial intelligence research and application in engineering, providing a broad academic exchange platform for researchers and engineers in related disciplines, Meanwhile, it played an important role in understanding the application of machine learning and big data technology in various related fields and exploring the possibility of integration between different disciplines. Through this international academic conference, not only enhances the academic vision of school faculty and students, but also broadens the academic exchange platform of our school, which has positive significance for further promoting the vigorous development of our discipline.
