Our 2010 Alumni, Dr. Yifan Song, the Research Assistant at the Helmholtz Kiel Marine Research Center in Germany, Was Invited to Give a Report to Undergraduate and Master's Students

In the afternoon of September 29, 2019, Dr. Yifan Song, grade 2010 alumni of Surveying and Mapping Engineering of our college, Master of Surveying and Mapping Engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and now a research assistant of Oceanic Machine Vision research group at GEOMAR Marine Research Center in Germany, was invited to the Civil Engineering College of Chongqing University to bring an academic report entitled“3D Reconstruction and Underwater Machine Vision” to our teachers and students. This is the first report of surveying and mapping series for the 90th anniversary of Chongqing University.

Firstly, Bo Yang, the Vice President of our college, introduced Dr. Yifan Song and expressed warm welcome and heartfelt thanks for his coming. Subsequently, Dr. Song briefly introduced two methods of three-dimensional reconstruction and the application of three-dimensional reconstruction in three-dimensional face recognition, autonomous driving, film and television, games, cultural relics digitization and protection, space exploration, augmented reality (AR), three-dimensional map and navigation, etc. Next, he introduced the basic flow of three-dimensional reconstruction in detail, including image matching, image dense matching and depth map fusion. The underwater machine vision which is being studied by the research group is mainly introduced by Dr. Song, including the difficulty of underwater machine vision, the physical model involved, the difficulties of processing the flat waterproof cover, the difficulty of handling the spherical waterproof cover, the components of underwater image, and the machine vision under the condition of moving light source, etc. Then, teacher Yali Zhang from our college introduced the growth process of Dr. Song. Following that, Dr. Song gave a detailed introduction to his study experience and study abroad experience to the students and teachers. In the end, Chang Deng, a second-year postgraduate of our college, who is at the University of Nottingham in the UK as a visiting research student, and Mengkun She, a third-year postgraduate of our college, who is at Helmholtz Kiel Marine research center, Germany, participated in this report through remote video. During the last period, Dr. Yifan Song, Mengkun She and Chang Deng gave valuable suggestions to students' questions.

This academic report not only gave the teachers and students a deep understanding of machine vision technology and its development, but also a new understanding of the dynamics of 3D modeling technology and various engineering applications, broaden their horizons and expanded their thinking. The students developed a deep understanding of studying abroad and benefited a lot from this report as well.
