PhD Candidate Chen Fuyong Attended the 29th ESREL 2019 and Delivered an Academic Presentation

The 29th European Safety and Reliability Conference (29th ESREL) was held on 22-26 September 2019 at Leibniz university, Hannover, Germany. It was well supported by academicians and practitioners. Chen Fuyong, a doctoral candidate in geotechnical engineering in our school, attended the conference and made an academic report.

Launched in 1989, the conference is the most influential and largest academic conference on the theme of "security and reliability" in the world. It is also an interdisciplinary platform about the theory, method, model and application problem in the field of risk, security and reliability. The Conference had opening address and keynote lectures delivered by distinguished geotechnical experts and eminent academicians including the Former President of the European Safety and Reliability Association and the Professor in the Ecole Centrale Paris, Prof Enrico Zio, the President-Elect of the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) 2017, Chairman of the European Safety and Reliability Association (ESRA) 2014-2018, the Editor-in-chief of Journal of Risk and Reliability and the Professor in the University of Stavanger Norway, Prof Terje Aven, and Fellow of Academy of Engineering Singapore, the Distinguished Professor and Vice Provost (Academic Personnel), National University of Singapore, Prof Kok Kwang Phoon, the Head of the Institute for Risk and Reliability at Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany. the Distinguished Professor of college of Tongji University, the President of the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability, the Director of the Shanghai Institute for Disaster Prevention and Relief, the Director of the International Joint Research Center for Engineering Reliability and Stochastic Mechanics (CERSM), Prof Jie Li.

On 23th September, Chen Fuyong made an academic report entitled as “Probabilistic assessment on stability and serviceability of existing tunnel due to down-crossing shield tunnel”, which reported the recent research progress of reliability analysis of new tunnel excavated to underpass the existing tunnel under the guidance of the supervisor Prof Zhang Wengang. An efficient method for evaluating the stability of crossing tunnels is proposed considering the uncertainty of surrounding rock parameters. This report attracted extensive attentions from design engineering and hot discussion about the reliability analysis of crossing tunnels in urban subway.

During the conference, Chen Fuyong conducted in-depth academic exchanges with scholars from various countries, which enriched the academic thoughts and vision of teachers and students of our school, and had positive significance for promoting the development of the civil engineering of our school.
