Professor Zhou Jiawen from Sichuan University made presentation on Geo-hazards mitigation and prevention

On May 27th, 2019, Professor Zhou Jiawen, from School of Water Resource & Hydropower, Sichuan University, was invited to SCE and made an academic presentation titled “Mechanism, instrumentation, mitigation & prevention for geohazard in high and steep slopes in Southwest mountainous area”.

The presentation started at 9:30 sharp. Firstly, Director of Geotechnical research institute, Prof Ding Xuanming introduced Prof Zhou to all the staff and students, and expressed his sincere welcome to Zhou’s arrival.  Prof Zhou introduced in detail the research on geological hazards in Southwest China, then presented the research outputs and progress of his team on the treatment of barrier lakes introduced by landslides.

Professor Zhou mainly elaborated his research from four aspects: frequent occurrences of geological hazards in southwest area, identification and prevention of dangerous rockfall and collapse, mechanism of hydrodynamic landslides, large scale landslides and prevention & control of geo-hazards. Taking the Baige landslide in Jinsha River as an example, Professor Zhou analyzed the formation mechanism and disaster-causing effect of the huge landslide, and explained the early identification, the volume amplification effect, as well as the prevention and control of landslides. Meanwhile, combined with his own research, Prof Zhou described their work in obtaining instrumented data and running data analysis, emphasized the importance of field monitoring data such as landslide deformation stage and back edge tension crack deformation.

During the Q&A session, Pro Zhou Jiawen had a deep discussion with the staffs and students present on landslide hazard risk identification and other related issues. In the end, Prof Ding Xuanming gave a summary and expressed gratitude again for Prof. Zhou’s visit and his thought-provoking speech.

Faculty members from the Geotechnical Research Institute including Associate Chair Prof Zhang Wengang, Prof Lu Liang, Prof Yang Zhongping, Prof Chen Zhixiong, Dr Li Peng, Dr Wang Lin, Dr Gu Dongming, Dr Wang Chenglong attended the academic report. It not only gave the audiences a more comprehensive understanding of common geological disasters in southwest mountainous area, but also shows them the latest technology and methods in the field of slope monitoring. The report broadens audiences’ thinking and vision on geohazard research, and promotes the further academic research.
