Dr. Yifan Song, research assistance of Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in Germany, was invited to give an online forum to our faculty

On May 11, 2020, at the invitation of the Institute of Surveying and Mapping Engineering, Dr. Yifan Song, the 2010 generation alumnus of surveying and mapping engineering in our faculty, research assistance of Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in Germany, together with M.Sc. Chang Deng, the second-year master student from our faculty, who is studying at the University of Nottingham in the UK as a visiting student, gave an interesting online academic forum to the faculty. The online forum was held using Tencent Meeting and the topic is “Frontiers and Applications in Visual 3D Reconstruction and the Sharing of Overseas Study Experience”, hosted by Prof. Yali Zhang.

At the beginning, Prof. Zhang introduced the two speakers to the audiences. Dr. Song introduced three widely used methods for visual 3D reconstruction by starting with the common visual phenomena in our life. He also presented its applications in autonomous driving, deep space and deep sea explorations. He especially demonstrated the applications in film & gaming industries and Augmented Reality, which interact between the real and virtual word by integrating 3d reconstruction and computer graphics rendering techniques. Later he introduced several research frontiers in this area, including reconstruction from refraction, machine learning in 3d reconstruction, Non-Line-Of-Sight reconstruction, reconstruction from attenuation and reconstruction under dynamic illumination. In the end, Dr. Song shared his overseas study and research experience and gave suggestions on how to prepare and apply doctoral positions in Germany.

Then Chang Deng also shared her experience of studying abroad during the academic visit and introduced her experience in learning simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology. At the end of the forum, two speakers discussed and answered the questions from the audiences about visual 3d reconstruction and studying abroad.
