July 28-30, 2019, hosted by the ISSMGE Technical Committee of Machine Learning and Big Data (TC309)、Risk and Insurance Research Branch of China Civil Engineering Society, and organized by Tongji University, the 2nd International Workshop on Machine Learning and Big Data in Geoscience was held at Tongji University. Professor Wengang ZHANG, Professor Haijia WEN, Postdoctoral Lin WANG, PhD candidate Runhong ZHANG, Liang HAN and other graduate students participated in this workshop. This meeting aims to provide a platform for scholars from all over the world to discuss the application of machine learning and big data technology in geotechnical engineering and explore other possibilities for machine learning in geotechnical engineering.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Hongwei HUANG. Professor Xianglin GU, Vice President of Tongji University, delivered a welcome speech.

Professor Zhang was invited to give a presentation entitled "Assessment of undrained shear strength of soft clays using Ensemble learning method" and served as the chairman of the conference. The conference has witnessed over 20 academic reports, among which scholars from all over the world have conducted enthusiastic academic exchanges on the latest research results in their respective research directions.

The experts and scholars of this seminar have fully discussed the frontier topics such as data learning, data fusion, deep learning, nonparametric Bayesian learning, tunneling intelligent decision making, data collection, and database sharing platform, proposed corresponding contents for these contents to promote the application of machine learning theory in practice.

This international workshop gathered many experts and scholars in the field of machine learning and big data research at home and abroad. It is a grand gathering of academic exchanges and provided a platform for scholars from all over the world to discuss data-driven issues in geotechnical engineering. Furthermore, it promotes the development of geotechnical engineering and played an important role on improving the friendship and cooperation of geotechnical researchers and engineers in this field.
