Online Academic Seminar "Machine Learning and Big Data in Geoscience and Geoengineering" Successfully Held

On January 8, 2022, the academic seminar “Machine Learning and Big Data in Geoscience and Geoengineering” held by the Society of Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering was successfully held online, sponsored by the School of Civil Engineering (SCE), Chongqing University (CQU), the Key Laboratory of Mountain Town Construction and New Technology of the Ministry of Education, the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) TC303 and TC309 Special Committees, and Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering-China Civil Engineering Society. A total of 2,391 users participated in this seminar, and nearly 1,100 people were online at the same time during the peak period.

Prof. Wengang Zhang, Associate Chair of the School of Civil Engineering of Chongqing University, introduced the background of the seminar and all distinguished guests. Prof. Wang Rui of Tsinghua University delivered a speech on behalf of the Youth Working Committee of Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering-China Civil Engineering Society.

At the seminar, 14 young experts and scholars jointly contributed a fantastic academic feast centered on their application in site stratum geological model, rock and soil parameters and constitutive, as well as tunnel and slope engineering. Prof. Zhang Wengang summarized these 14 reports into four aspects: machine learning and big data in site stratum characterization and refined geological modeling, rock and soil parameters and constitutive model, tunnel construction and operation and maintenance, as well as application of landslides and engineering slopes.

Afterwards, the seminar carried out warm discussions on standardized database construction, data quality and data management, and algorithm application. Everyone agreed that scientific research institutes in colleges and universities should communicate and cooperate with production units such as enterprises to better understand the actual production needs and form complementary win-win results.

Researcher Liu Zhongqiang from the Norwegian Institute of Geotechnical Engineering, Professor Wang Changhong from Shanghai University, and engineer Li Fengwei from China Railway Construction and other participants made a summary and outlook of the seminar.
