On January 12th, the 3rd National Young Faculty Teaching Skills Competition of Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering Final ended well. Cheng Yong, associate professor of SCE, CQU, won the first prize with excellent performance after 6 months of fierce competitions.
The competition was held online due to the epidemic, in line with the teaching theme in the post-epidemic era. In spite of limitations of online courses, Cheng was immersed in finding way to seek effectiveness and avoid monotonousness by interacting enthusiastically while remotely rather than himself talking all the time.
During the competition, Cheng Yong insisted on the student-oriented principle, making full use of the advantages of the Internet by emphasizing the role of slides. Combined with animations, concise and elegant slides showed questions at appropriate situations, inspiring students to think about, discuss, and solve problems. When designing the teaching contents, he concentrated on integrity and systematic organization. His organization, from the Carnot Cycle proposed by Carnot to the Four Thermal Processes and Thermal Efficiency, was combined with the current theme "carbon peak" and "carbon neutral", making students to think about the significance of thermal efficiency, which demonstrated his thoughts beyond expertise. What’s more, he exploited teaching tools cleverly as auxiliary teaching means, such as blackboard, multimedia and school supplies, and his enthusiasm as well as logical speech won unanimous praise of both experts and students.
This competition was aimed to further strengthen teachers' ethics, promote fine teaching ethos of moral cultivation. At the same time, it provided as a bridge for teachers’ mutual learning so that they could renew their teaching philosophy, methods, and educational design. A total of 68 teachers from 45 colleges or universities nationwide signed up for the competition, 47 for the professional foundation courses and 21 for the specialized courses. This competition was organized by the Teaching Guidance Sub-Committee of Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering of Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, Chinese Association of Refrigeration, and Council of "HAVC Fund" of Qingdao University of Technology.
