The geotechnical engineering discipline of Chongqing University, founded back in 1952, was amongst the first programs authorized to confer Ph. D. degrees in China in 1986, and later became a national key discipline in 2006. On that basis was established the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering (IGE). At present, IGE has 25 faculty staff (11 professors, 8 associate professors). In particular, IGE’s three professors are honorably sponsored by the nation-wide prestigious Cheung Kong Scholars Program and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Besides, it has a very competent research team having won a series of honors & awards in the area of science and engineering both domestically and internationally. Those includes state technological and invention awards of China, national science and technology progress awards, provincial science and technology prizes, etc. In addition, IGE has published more than 1000 journal papers, out of which more than 500 are indexed by SCI and EI. IGE has also published more than 10 monographs and national textbooks. Moreover, it has received a good share of research grants from various sources such as the National Key Research and Development Program of China, National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), the Major State Basic Research Development Program of China (973 Program), National Natural Science Foundation, etc.. The research focus of IGE has been deliberately placed on areas like 1) Rock Mechanics and Engineering, 2) Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, 3) Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 4) Energy and Environmental Geotechnical Engineering, 5) Tunnels and slope engineering, 6) Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation. While the institution is understandably proud of its past accomplishments, it is essential that it will continue to strive to achieve greater heights.
