Exploring Innovation and Heritage: International Summer Camp's SCE Lab Tour and Chongqing Cultural Excursion

2024-08-04 19:18

On July 6th, 2024, the fifth day of the International Summer Camp, students visited the SCE Laboratory in the morning, which included the Shaking Table Lab, Structural Engineering Lab, and Geotechnical Engineering Lab.

In the Shaking Table Lab, they observed the dynamic response of architectural models under precisely simulated seismic waves, gaining a deeper understanding of the wisdom and complexity of seismic design.

In the Structural Engineering Lab, complex structural models and advanced testing equipment sparked participants’ curiosity about the mysteries of civil engineering.

The geotechnical engineering lab took participants on an exploration of the underground world, providing them with a preliminary grasp of professional knowledge in foundation treatment and geotechnical mechanics. Particularly in the microbial soil lab within the geotechnical engineering lab, rows of transparent glass vessels were neatly arranged, and the participants saw microorganisms being cultured inside. The teacher explained that these microorganisms would be domesticated and survive, eventually being used to promote the formation of microbial geotechnical materials, which could help improve the physical and mechanical properties of soil.

This series of lab visits exposed them to cutting-edge technologies and research findings in China's field of civil engineering, broadening their academic horizons.

Afternoon activities included a ride on the Changjiang Cableway, known as the "Mountain City's aerial public bus," offering participants a panoramic view of Chongqing. From this vantage point, they overlooked the magnificent confluence of the two rivers and experienced the unique charm of the city's three-dimensional transportation system.

They also visited the famous cultural landmarks, including the Huguang Guild Hall and the historic 18 Steps, experiencing Chongqing's distinctive landscapes and cultural heritage.
