ISSMGE TC303 academic presentation series: Use of Machine Learning (ML) for Geo-Hazards Prevention and Mitigation

2021-01-16 09:21

On the afternoon of 30 December 2020, Professor Samui P, expert of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE-TC303) and Associate Professor of NIT Patna, was invited by ISSMGE/TC303 (Coastal and river disaster mitigation and rehabilitation), presenting an academic online report with the title of "Use of Machine Learning (ML) for Geo-Hazards Prevention and Mitigation, which broadened the visions of the faculty and students.

Professor Samui P first introduced the basic principles and detailed methodologies of machine learning techniques such as Artificial Neural Network(ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM), Relevance Vector Machine (RVM), Fast K Nearest Neighbor, Navie bayes classifier, Decision Forest, Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline(MARS), Group Method of Data Handling(GMDH) etc. Next, he combined these techniques with the practical engineering problems such as sand liquefaction discrimination, slope stability analysis and static penetration data set analysis, which intuitively showed how to apply the machine learning techniques in classification and regression problems.

Then, Professor Samui P showed the use of sensitivity analysis to determine the effects of inputs of a particular problem, and introduced the calculation results of machine learning techniques, which demonstrated the use of ML techniques in Matlab software. After that, he further analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of each machine learning techniques, which provided a series of suggestions for students to use machine learning techniques in the future.

Finally, the students actively discussed the relevant questions with Professor Samui P, and Professor Samui P patiently answered them one by one.
