The 16th National Symposium on Foundation Treatment was successfully held at Chongqing University on May 7th to 9th, 2021. The symposium is hosted by Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering-China Civil Engineering Society, organized by Chongqing University, Chongqing Construction Science Research Institute Co.,Ltd., Chongqing Institution of Geotechnical Engineering-Chongqing Civil and Architectural Society, Chinese Institution of Geotechnical Engineering-Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering Society, co-organized by Chongqing Jiaotong University, Hohai University, Southwest University, Key Laboratory of New Technology for Construction of cities in mountain area, National joint Engineering Research Center of Geohazards Prevention in The Reservoir Areas(Chongqing), General Research Institute of Architecture & Planning Design Co.,Ltd., Chongqing University, Chongqing University Industrial Technology Research Institute, Yangtze Normal university, Ground Improvement Magazine, supported by Nanjing Earth Products China Ltd., Seameasure(Wuhan) Instruments Co., Ltd., Beijing Tianqi Huachen Technology Co., Ltd., Beijing Deyan Technology Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Donghua Testing Technology Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Xintai Rock Technology Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Yongchang Science and Education Instrument Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

The symposium gathered more than 400 experts, representatives of scientific and technological workers and graduate students in the field of geotechnical engineering and foundation treatment, who come from more than 140 universities and research institutes across the country. In addition, more than 400 people engaging in the filed watched the live broadcast of the conference online. This is a grand gathering for ground-based processing technology workers.

The opening ceremony of the meeting was presided over by Professor Xin Lu, Chairman of Chongqing Institution of Geotechnical Engineering-Chongqing Civil and Architectural Society. The symposium revolves around discussions on the latest achievements on the theme of "Opportunities and Challenges in Foundation Treatment along the Belt and Road". The conference invited 11 well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad, who are engaged in ground treatment research, to give special invitation reports, and 78 experts and representatives gave thematic reports at the branch venues, covering civil engineering, construction, transportation, ocean, environment, water conservancy and other projects. The field reflects the latest progress in the direction of foundation treatment in China in recent years. During the meeting, discussions and speeches were active and the atmosphere was lively, and very good results were received.

With the end of the opening ceremony, a series of exquisite foundation treatment academic reports began under the leadership of academician Xiaonan Gong, bringing one after another academic feast to all the experts and scholars attending the meeting. The 16th National Symposium on Foundation Treatment has provided a good platform for the researchers of foundation treatment to communicate, learn and solve their doubts.

In this symposium, Academician Xiaonan Gong brought his views on “geotechnical engineering norms”, which he put forward 21 years ago (1999), to the  report, pointing out that norms should be formulated and practiced according to the characteristics of geotechnical engineering. Geotechnical engineering specifications should be General rather than detailed, and the terms should be in principle. At the same time, several problems that should be paid attention to in foundation treatment are also mentioned, such as the formation condition of composite foundation, the technology of pile implantation, the criterion of geotechnical engineering, the bearing capacity of foundation, and geotechnical engineering investigation.

On the morning of May 9th, with the end of the report of Professor Jiangbin Wu, a senior engineer at East China Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., all reports of the 16th National Symposium on Foundation Treatment were successfully completed.

At 11:50 on the morning of May 9th, the closing ceremony of the conference was held. The closing ceremony was presided over by Professor Jianlin Yu of Zhejiang University, and Professor Guanbao Ye of Tongji University delivered a speech. At the same time, the right to host the "The 17th National Symposium on Foundation Treatment " was handed over. It will be held in Yinchuan in 2022.

“A nine-storeyed terrace must be constructed from its very base” As a basic subject of civil engineering, foundation treatment technology has a wide range of applications in the construction of major facilities such as high-speed railways, highways, high-rise buildings, bridges, and airports. The successful holding of the 16th National Symposium on Foundation Treatment has promoted the exchange and development of foundation treatment research.

The symposium ended successfully on the afternoon of May 9. The two-day meeting conducted a comprehensive and in-depth discussion on the development and application of foundation treatment technology, foundation engineering survey technology, design calculations, construction equipment, etc., and also pointed out the direction for subsequent development in the field of foundation treatment.
