Recently, the Ministry of Education announced the list of awards of the 2022 Science Research Famous Achievement Award in Higher Institutions (Science and Technology). The "Resistance Mechanism against continuous collapse and analysis theory for building steel structures and composite structures" program led by Professor Yang Bo of SCE and jointly completed by Academician Zhou Xuhong, researcher Kang Shaobo, and doctor Wang Hao won the second prize in the Science and Technology Award.

The team of Professor Yang Bo has always been committed to researching the continuous collapse resistance of steel-structure buildings and composite-structure buildings. After more than 10 years of research, the team carried out systematic basic theoretical research work on steel structure column nodes, flat frame structures, and three-dimensional overall structural systems and produced a series of high-level innovative results: it proposed a theoretical analysis and calculation model of steel structure column nodes under continuous collapse conditions, revealed the resistance mechanism of steel structure flat frames against continuous collapse, proposed a design method for steel structure plane frames against continuous collapse, and proposed a simplified calculation method for steel frame resistance to shock and collapse of fall layers. The three-dimensional steel frame composite floor structural system's interaction and influences with the combination effect, tensile membrane effect, and catenary effect were clarified. According to research findings, the structural system's bearing capacity can be raised by 50% to resist continuous collapse after taking the effects of the floor slab into full consideration. The research findings have had a significant academic influence and have been published in prestigious or authoritative academic publications in China and abroad.

The Ministry of Education established the Science Research Famous Achievement Award in Higher Institutions (Science and Technology) to motivate university professors, science and technology professionals, and scientific research organizations to make exceptional contributions to the advancement of science and technology. After the National Natural Science Award, the National Technological Invention Award, and the National Science and Technology Progress Award, it is a significant science and technology honor.
