Institute of Geotechnical Engineering

May16-2026

The Institute of Geotechnical Engineering (IGE) at Chongqing University has a long and distinguished history dating back to 1952. The geotechnical engineering discipline was among the first in China authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees in 1986 and was later recognized as a National Key Discipline in 2006. Building upon this strong academic foundation, the Institute has developed into a leading center for education, research, and innovation in geotechnical engineering.

IGE currently comprises 26 faculty members, including 15 professors, 6 associate professors, and 5 lecturers/postdoctoral researchers. Among them, one professor is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and two professors are honorably sponsored by the nation-wide prestigious Cheung Kong Scholars Program and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. The Institute has established a highly accomplished research community with extensive contributions to both fundamental research and engineering practice.

Faculty members and researchers at IGE have received numerous national and provincial awards, including State Technological Invention Awards, National Science and Technology Progress Awards, and other major honors in science and engineering. The Institute has published more than 1,000 journal papers, including over 500 papers indexed by SCI and EI, as well as more than 10 monographs and nationally recognized textbooks.

Research activities at IGE are supported by major competitive funding programs, including the National Key Research and Development Program of China, the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

          Research interests of IGE include:

  1. Biogenic Construction

  2. Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering

  3. Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering

  4. Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering

  5. Energy and Environmental Geotechnics

  6. Tunnel and Underground Engineering

  7. Slope Stability and Geological Hazard Mitigation

  8. Experimental and Computational Geomechanics

  9. Geological Carbon Storage and Geo-energy Systems

  10. Multiphase Flow and Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Modeling

Committed to academic excellence and engineering innovation, IGE continues to advance cutting-edge research, cultivate future leaders in geotechnical engineering, and contribute to sustainable infrastructure development and disaster resilience worldwide.
