Institute of Urban Underground Space

May13-2026

The Institute of Urban Underground Space (IUUS) of Chongqing University’s School of Civil Engineering is founded on two dominant disciplines: underground rock engineering and disaster prevention & mitigation engineering.

Focusing on major national strategies such as the transportation power strategy, urban renewal, Yangtze River Economic Belt development, western mountainous infrastructure construction and dual-carbon goals, its core research fields include: rock mechanics, intelligent numerical simulation of geotechnical engineering, mountain geological hazard assessment and control, environmental geotechnics, energy geotechnical engineering, AI-enabled geotechnical monitoring, and stability & life-cycle risk assessment of key geotechnical infrastructures (tunnels, deep pits, slopes, etc.).

IUUS has built an excellent innovation team led by outstanding middle-aged and young scholars, with 14 faculty members including 10 professors and 2 associate professors. The team includes one National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipient, one Yangtze River Scholar, and two national overseas high-level talents.

Against the backdrop of national major infrastructure layout and geohazard prevention, IUUS is committed to tackling key technical bottlenecks in mountainous urban underground engineering. Relying on Chongqing University, it aligns with national strategic demands, integrates cutting-edge technology and engineering practice, innovates geohazard prevention theories and technologies, and promotes the high-quality development of the discipline.
